Day in the Life of a Food Blogger

May 10, 2012

In case you’ve ever been curious about the daily schedule of a food blogger (specifically, this food blogger), I thought I’d give you an overview of what a typical day looks like for me. I should start off by saying that using the word “typical” to describe my schedule is a bit off-target, because I rarely find myself following the same pattern twice. But, that’s one aspect of working independently and still being a student that I love, the freedom to follow a whim and answer only to myself, albeit I do have deadlines to meet and more often than not, end up working 12+ hour days.

So, here goes a general outline of how I live my life:

6 a.m. – 6:15 a.m.: Wake up naturally, with no alarm clock.

6:15 a.m. – 6:30 a.m.: Morning cat mom duties including feeding them and cleaning the litter box.

6:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.: Daily blog post including downloading photos from the previous day, editing photos, writing post.

7:30 – 7:45 a.m.: Marketing blog post by putting link on Twitter, Facebook, other avenues. Respond to blog comments and e-mails.

7:45 – 8:30 a.m.: Breakfast which almost always is a green smoothie, general kitchen clean-up, take vitamins.

8:30 – 9:15 a.m.: Drink cup of tea, meditate, write in journal, read the newspaper from the day before.

9:15 – 9:30 a.m.: Brush tea, get dressed for gym.

9:30 – 11: 15 a.m.: Go to gym, exercise, come home from gym.

11:15 – 11:30 a.m.: Get dressed, wash face, put on sunscreen and teensy bit of make-up.

11:30 – noon: Make lunch and take photos of food. Lunch is generally a large green salad with a hemp-based salad dressing, chopped vegetables and beans or tempeh.

noon – 12:30 p.m.: Eat lunch. Make a dessert smoothie with greens like my Berry-Delicious Smoothie:

12:30 – 1:00 p.m.: Take vitamins, drink another cup of tea, clean up from lunch, check e-mail.

1:00 – 2:30 p.m.: Work on school projects, respond to blog comments, or do misc. paperwork or writing projects.

2:30 – 4:00 p.m.: Either do errands including food shopping or continue to work on school projects or others.

4:00 – 4:15 p.m.: Feed cats dinner.

4:15 – 4:30 p.m.: Check e-mail again, respond to blog comments, read other blogs and make comments.

4:30 – 5:00 p.m.: Shower and put on pajamas.

5:00 – 6:00 p.m.: Make dinner and do any prep of food for the next day which usually includes washing greens for the next morning’s smoothie.

6:00 – 7:00 p.m.: Eat dinner with Alan which could be anything from my 20-Ingredient Antioxidant Soup to Curry Tempeh Tacos. I usually have fruit for dessert or just heat up some frozen berries to satisfy my sweet tooth:

7:00 – 7:30 p.m.: Clean up kitchen, brush cats’ teeth, give Roxy her evening dose of medication, put away laundry and any other misc. clean-up items, brush my own teeth and take out contact lenses.

7:30 – 8:30 p.m.: Read for school or pleasure. I can’t remember the last time I read a fiction book, I almost always am reading some type of nutrition book.

8:30 – 9:30 p.m.: Snuggle with cats, watch something on Netflix with Alan (we are currently re-watching every episode of Doc Martin) and generally relax.

9:30 – 10:00 p.m.: Lights out!

Yesterday was anything but ordinary as we spent the day in Santa Barbara for some appointments. As I mentioned in my last blog post, I made lunch to eat on the road so we would have time for a walk and shopping. I packed up a large cooler with some reusable ice packs and made bean wraps and a dessert smoothie (sorry, no pictures of lunch). The weather was warm and a bit hazy, but it was nice to get out and enjoy the sunshine:

On the way home, we hit the Classic Organic for some fresh produce. Hmmmm, not sure if this meets food safety codes (ha ha)?

What’s your typical day look like? Do you prefer a structured or unstructured schedule?

I love this post Carrie. Since you blog every day, workout, cook each meal, take classes, etc…I have wondered how you fit it all in. You get quite a bit accomplished everyday and that’s awesome it only takes you an hour to add to your blog.

I both love and thrive on structure, especially having a 4 year old – a daily routine really helps keep things in order and helps to eliminate SOME ;-) stress.

You look fantastic and at peace in all of your pictures. :) I’m sure your lifestyle has a lot to do w/that!

Thanks Ginny! Your little one certainly does look like she keeps you busy, but I love that you find time to make all of your amazing food! :)

BTW, what vitamins do you take? Do you take them bc you feel like you’re not getting a full balance of vitamins and minerals, or just to be safe, or?…..

Hi Ginny! I follow Dr. Fuhrman’s protocol for vitamins which pretty much includes a basic multivitamin plus a separate one for calcium, D, magnesium, etc. and a vegan DHA/EPA. Here’s the link where he makes his recommendations: http://www.drfuhrman.com/shop/VAdvisor.aspx. I also take a probiotic and a supplement called Perilla seed that is supposed to help with allergies.

I should probably do a blog post about supplements at some point, but it can be a little complicated and I’m not qualified to make specific recommendations to people. We can talk about this more if you want when we get together next (I’m going to e-mail you right now about the date in June when I’ll be in town).

I’m so glad you posted this. I work full time and blog and write articles at night. I’m always curious what it would be like to do that full time (I know you’re in school though!)

I’ll be curious as to what your day is like after you finish school. You’ll have to let us know! Thanks for the insight. You are quite productive!!

Hi Lauren! I just checked out your blog, it’s awesome! What type of work do you do? I love being a student and I’m so grateful to have the ability to “work” from home, although it still requires discipline to achieve a balance between work and play. I tend to be a workaholic so somedays I literally sit in front of the computer the whole day. I try not to do that too often, though. :)

Thanks for the reply! I am an attorney by day. I am very lucky though and only work 9-5 so I have plenty of time in the evenings to cook and blog. It’s pretty much what I do most nights and I love it. I consider it to be a second job.

Glad you like the blog – visit often! I love yours – I never miss a post!

Thanks Lauren! You are a busy lady and I agree, keeping up with cooking and blogging often feels like a job. In fact, sometimes I look at it that way so then I feel better about all of the time I devote to it. Plus, by cooking healthy meals at home, I save $$ and feel good. Have a great weekend!

I have no preference :) Interesting how your day goes. This is mine

6am — get up and exercise or sleep in
6:45 — shower
7am — get ready for work, snuggle with cat, get lunch and breakfast together.
7:30 — drive to work, eat breakfast
8-3:30 — work
4pm — either work afterschool, walk/run the track at the park or go home and babysit.
5:30 — kiddo gets picked up or I go home if I have been working and I will do anything from make dinner, play on computer, take the cat on a walk, exercise if I have not done so, clean. It all depends.

Summer vacation starts in a little over a week so then my days will be unstructured.

Hi Robyn! Congrats on your upcoming vacation, it sounds like you are going to have a great trip. By the way, I will be in town those dates we discussed, so we will get to catch up. Yay!

Wow – this schedule is very inspiring! For some reason, the past 6 months I have been on a no-schedule schedule, which is resulting in chaos and unfinished tasks. I think you have just inspired me to get it together and get back on track with my own schedule!

I’m glad my schedule inspired you, Jennifer! Course, you’ve had your hands full of late with the bun in the oven. :)

I can’t believe someone else in the US watches Doc Martin!!

I think Netflix recommended it to me based on my interests and I LOVE it! I heard there is a 5th season coming out, woo-hoo!!! :)

My typical day doesn’t look ANYTHING like yours, but my cat does exactly what your cat does! Hygenic or not, I really don’t care!

Wow! You are quite productive! Something to be jealous about :)
I seem to get up late..
I’m lucky to work from home , so most of my weekdays are getting up at 8am, getting dressed etc. and start working at 8.30 am while eating breakfast. I eat lunch between 12-12.30 and then work ’till 5pm.. Most of the weekdays my mom makes dinner (that’s the benefit of living at home). And I tend to veg on my couch in the evening. I should be more active and I’m working on that. In the weekends we go for walks or do volunteer work. And in the meantime I try to write blogposts and read other blogs.

Wow Carrie, you are one busy person! I do miss the days when I was a student because there is no way I could fit all that in my bust schedule. I get up at 6am, where I shower etc… and I’m out the door at 6:30. I take a bus to work, which usually gets me to work for 7:20am. I’m a school teacher so I’ll then work from 7:20am til about 5:30pm. I’ll get home from work about 6:30pm, where I’ll eat dinner, exercise for an hour and then either finish off school work for the next day, or read a book. I’m usually in bed by 9pm.

Hi Jen! I think your schedule sounds busier than mine! What grade do you teach? Take care, Carrie

Reply

Jen May 12, 2012 at 10:59 am

I’m not sure what grade it would be, as I’m in England, but over here it’s called Year 6 (10-11 year olds). Would that be grade 6 for you guys?

I also apologise for the slight typo in my last post. I have no idea what a bust schedule is!

Reply

Carrie May 12, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Hi Jen! Yes, that sounds about right, maybe more like 5th grade here in the U.S. I commend you for being a teacher, my mom is one, too, and I know it’s not easy. No problem on the typo, I figured out what you meant. Good luck with your bust schedule, ha ha!

This is great, I always wondered what food bloggers’ days are like! I wouldn’t think it would be a lifestyle for everyone though because it seems to take a lot of discipline in order to not waste the day away…!

Do you ever get tired of cooking and if so, how do you handle that? I am facing this problem right now and finding it challenging to still eat healthy until my drive to cook returns!

Your meditation routine or info would make a good post!

Carrie May 14, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Hi Laura! I definitely get burned out from cooking, but that’s why leftovers are so important. I almost always have a soup or something in the freezer that I can defrost so I really only cook a few times a week. If I am really desperate, I will always do something like the lunch I ate yesterday – just slather some canned beans on a tortilla with some avocado, Veganaise and chopped veggies and call it a meal! I try really, really hard to make my meals at home not only to save money, but because then I know there aren’t too many added oils, salt or sugars. Plus, I like to buy organic ingredients whenever I can. I guess you could say I’m a bit of a control-freak when it comes to my food, but eating healthy is probably one of my top three priorities in life. I will def address meditation in one of my next posts, I’m glad you’re interested!
