Introducing “Healthy Vegan Fridays” Blog Party!

July 18, 2012

Thanks for everyone’s very supportive comments on my career planning and my likely decision not to become an RD. It sounds strange, but when I got rid of the physical clutter in my house, my thoughts immediately turned inward and I started re-examining my life and my goals. I’m not sure there’s anything left in my life that hasn’t been picked up, examined and either thrown out or lovingly embraced. It’s been an interesting summer so far, to say the least.

So, I alluded in my last post about a project that can involve YOU. It’s something that’s been in the works for a few months now and is being spearheaded by Shelby at Everyday Vegan Girl (she has an awesome blog, so check it out sometime). Shelby approached me a while back and asked me to put together a new “blog party” idea she had. She also invited Gabby at The Veggie Nook (again, another fantastic blog that you must read) to pull it together, so the three of us have been working behind the scenes to make it happen.

The cool thing is that all three of us have a focus on recipes that are not only 100% vegan, but use whole food ingredients without a lot of salt, sugar or oils. After some discussion,we came up with the idea for Healthy Vegan Fridays!

If you’re not familiar with the idea of a blog party or blog hop, it’s a way for bloggers to share recipes on each other’s sites. If you’ve participated in the “What I Ate Wednesday” blog party, then you know how it works. For readers, it means that once a week you’re going to get links of the best, whole food, plant-based recipes from the blog world. For bloggers, it means you can submit your favorite whole food recipe from the week and drive more traffic to your site, make new blog friends and get inspiration for new recipes. It’s going to be so much fun!

Our logo looks like this:

Isn’t it so adorable? Julie at Savvy Eats designed it for us. For more info on how the blog hop will work, you can read more here. I’m going to try and get the guidelines on my site, too. We’ll be doing the first round next week: Friday, July 27th.

Don’t worry, I’ll be giving you more information about the process next week. To be honest, I’m still a little confused by the details because I’m not that tech-competent. For that reason, if you want to participate, I will do my best to explain it step-by-step.

Before I wrap this up, have I mentioned that I’m traveling to Portland, Oregon, Thursday through Monday? That means I’m leaving tomorrow, yikes. Alan is coming with me and we’re soooo excited to explore this awesome city again (the first time was for the Vida Vegan Con, you can read my posts about it here). We are going to meet up with some really special people, so stay tuned for updates on that as I post from the road.

Portland, aka “Vegan Heaven”, here we come!!!

Have fun! I don’t even know where to start on recommending what you do in Rip City, all else fails hit up Saturday Market to check out all the cool handmade stuff and the Lan Su Chinese Gardens. Again, have fun and if you remember, wave as you go over/drive by Corvallis!

The blog hop sounds awesome! It’s plenty vegan friendly here in San Diego but I would absolutely love exploring Portland, have fun!

Hi Mary! I want to see more of San Diego and plan to do so after I move to the Palm Springs area. Plus, my BFF lives in Del Mar so I have a good excuse to visit. Any fave vegan recommendations specifically for SD?

Just a humble suggestion…you should change your picture on your comment replies to the same one you put on your header. I just love that picture you chose!! Your joy shines through. It definitely reflects the new, refreshed and rejuvenated Carrie!

Hey Carrie. This is going to sound like someone’s mother. Take the RD exam. You Re so close. I have nEver regretted finishing things like that. You are young (yes you are), your children-kitties will not be upset if you study a bit longer and you may just have an edge with that “extra” credential. I couldnt hold back any longer. I feel that so strongly in this increasingly competitive world all preparation and credentials are valuable. Now I’ll leave you alone. Best to you.

Hi Jane, thanks for your frank advice, I do appreciate it. I’ve got to admit in my heart of hearts that I haven’t given up on becoming an RD for sure. I guess for now it’s a way to deal with all of the projects I have going on and not get overwhelmed. 1,200 unpaid hours is A LOT of work, it would take me 15 months part-time. But, I do feel good about finishing up the coursework because I am so close. Again, thanks for your advice, I probably needed someone to say that to me. :)

You, Carrie, are a gracious listener. I truly wish you all the best in whatever you do but I just was bursting with my humble opinion. Carrie On!

Have so much fun in Portland! It’s on my “must visit” list for sure :)

I second that! Next Friday will be here before we know it!

I sooooo need to go to Portland! It’s on my must visit list too…hey, maybe we should all meet up there for Vegan Vida Con…? I’ve been entertaining the idea of going to that and since it’s in Portland, that’s just double the reason to go!

Yes!!!!!! A meet-up at VVC would be amazing, I already bought my ticket! It was so much fun last time and I can only imagine how much bigger and better it’s going to be in 2013. Plus, it’s always fun to meet blogger buddies in person. It’s like a 3-day long slumber party, although some of us require more sleep than others. :)

Aww I totally wish I could, just don’t think it’s in the budget for me this year :( Going back to school after working a minimum wage job :S

Someday though! I will be super jealous of the both of you if you go and you’ll have to tell me allllll about it!

I am so happy I stumbled across your blog!! I am a central coast resident myself and finishing up my last year at Long Beach State for Nutrition! I’m in the process of wondering if I should go through with getting the RD, but I think that if I apply and I get into an internship then I will go through with it. I have the same philosophy for a job, I would rather focus on wellness and healthy cooking eating than working in a clinical setting. I am stoked on your blog and looking forward to reading more :)

Thanks, Maggie, I’m so glad you found me, too! I love meeting people from the central coast. Congrats on finishing up your nutrition stuff, it’s a long road and some of the classes are so intense! I didn’t think I would survive Biochem. Do you write a blog? As you probably read, I’m steering away from the RD road, but I guess the honest truth is I’m not sure which way I’m going to go. Keep me updated on your journey.

Also, so glad to see that you’re coming to Portland for a visit & VVC. Hopefully we can meet in person during the con. For some awesome healthy vegan food & juice downtown check out Prasad on NW 9th & Davis. It’s my go-to for a casual healthy meal. Have a great time!
