Life Update:
Good morning and happy Friday to you! These past several weeks have been too busy for me. I’m working on my final project for my master’s degree and it’s scary, difficult and overwhelming. The hardest part is doing something I’ve never done before which is a huge literature review and feeling pressure to do it really well. Truth be told, the most pressure I’m feeling is coming from myself and I’m trying to do my best to take it one day at a time, to realize I will make mistakes and to ask for help from my advisors. I’ll get through it, though, and I’ll be stronger and more skilled because of it.
I suppose that this giant project is not unlike other tasks I’ve tackled in the past, whether it be my first master’s degree in business, creating my app, facing cancer, adopting a plant-based diet, taking control of my health, etc. The most comforting statements I’ve come up with are that I don’t have be perfect and that the only person I have to satisfy is myself. I also try to remind myself just to enjoy the journey and think less about the end result.
Thanks for letting me vent.
Things in my life that are making me happy include finishing ten speeches with Toastmasters and earning my “Competent Communicator” award (is there something slightly back-handed about the name of that award or am I just being overly sensitive?), spending Tuesday afternoon at the salon getting my hair(s) beautified, obsessively watching House of Cards on Netflix in my free time, going on winter desert hikes before Alan and I leave this weekend, and making another batch of Almond Pulp Goji Cookies.
Oh yeah, today is the 4-month anniversary of my thyroid cancer surgery. Here’s a picture of me, my scar and my hair (ha ha, that’s a joke) for ‘ya:
I’ll see my endocrinologist next week for some routine blood work. I’m very curious to know where my thyroid levels are now and if I have to adjust my medication again.

Nice hair! You look great!
omg omg omg you picked my recipe as one of your fav pics =D =D =D that totally just *made* my day!!!
And on to more serious comments…
You have so much going on the past several months, you are amazingly strong and will get through this. Your final project will be great, go easy on yourself ;p
Btw – your scar is looking great! Fading very nicely =)
Have a great weekend Carrie!
Thanks, Kimmy!!! I loved your recipe and pictures so thank YOU for sharing it!
Among other things, I love that your hair is heart-shaped for Valentine’s Day!
Like the color too
Keep it up, Carrie. You are awesome. Your project will be just perfect and will be just “you.” Don’t worry about a thing.
Thanks, Jan, I needed that vote of confidence. You’d think after this many years of school, I’d be a pro, but yesterday and this morning I was seriously overwhelmed and questioning my abilities. I feel better now.
I’m relatively new to your blog and had no idea that you fought cancer. I think it’s awesome that you spread such a powerful message of fighting cancer with the life that you live. You are helping so many people…keep it up!
Oh, and you look beautiful!!
Thanks, Sarah!!!
Yum, Amber’s bolognese sauce looks super delicious. I get so many great ideas and much inspiration from HVF.
Also, really adorable hair.
Thanks, Nikki!
You can totally handle anything Carrie! I know you will rock this lit review
Happy #30- I’m so proud of us too!!
Thanks so much for making my bolognese recipe one of your picks of the week, Carrie!
Thanks for sharing the super awesome recipe, Amber!
love that pic of you! so adorable and you are rocking the hair
hope your stress dissipates soon. i have got some going on at work too and feel extremely tired from it!
Thanks, Kalli! I’m feeling a little better and hope that I’ll make more progress on my project next week. Good luck with your work stuff!
Okay, so people get a lot of flack for being “their own worst enemy” and tell you to chill out. That may be true (and good advice)…but that’s what makes you great. You will rock your final review for your Masters, and it will be the work you want it to be – even though you may be making it harder on yourself than others would. Keep it up, and great job!!!
Thanks, Crissie!!! In some ways, you’re right. If I didn’t put pressure on myself, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing. I suppose it’s about finding balance and recognizing when I need help. Ultimately, I think I will be very proud of the project I’m doing. Thank you for the support.
You are not alone Carrie. I’m in the same Master’s thesis writing boat. Sometimes it feels like a storm is rocking the boat, but in the end it will be smooth sailing. I just finished a 30+ page draft of my lit review and methods. Now onto the data analysis, which is equally stressful. But, no worries, I’m sure your final project will be fantastic and totally worth it in the end! Keep up the good work!
Love the Best Use of Kale award
Sending you lots of smiles,
Angela
Thanks, Angela!!! It helps to have the insight of someone going through the same process. I’m jeaaaaaaalous of youur progress, though.
I’m working on my search strategy and I keep going down the “research black hole” as I like to call it. I’m taking it one step at a time and trying to remember it’s about learning and that’s it’s a good thing that I’m being pushed out of my comfort zone.
You will do great on your final project, but best of luck!
I am so excited that I won! Thank-you!
