Chocolate Pear Smoothie from Carrie on Vegan

I love doing giveaways and today’s is a good one!

It all started when I got this package from Linwoods Health Foods (BTW, getting presents in the mail is undoubtedly one of the best perks of being a blogger!):

Package from Linwoods

I honestly had never heard of Linwoods products before and I was really excited to find out that they make these super food mixtures:

Sampler of Linwoods Health Foods products

The full-size sample I got was a blend of ground flaxseeds, almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts and Q10:

It just begged to be incorporated into a green smoothie recipe:

I counted it as part of the “goodies” that I usually add to my smoothies including cacao nibs, acai berry powder, and Ceylon cinnamon:

I just recently experimented with adding fresh pear to my smoothies and I really like the texture that it creates:

I sprinkled some more of the blend on top for texture:

Here’s the recipe:

Chocolate Pear Smoothie
Recipe type: Breakfast
Serves: 4
  • ¼ cup hemp seeds
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 ripe pear
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 pound lettuce spring mix
  • 1 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 4 tablespoons Linwoods superfood blend or 4 tablespoons ground flax seed
  • 2 tablespoons cacao nibs
  • 1 teaspoon acai berry powder
  • ½ teaspoon Ceylon cinnamon
  1. Place hemp seeds and water in a high-speed blender. Process on high until creamy. Add pear, banana, lettuce, mango, Linwoods superfood blend, cacao nibs, acai berry powder, and cinnamon. Process on high, using the tamper if necessary to push the ingredients into the blade. Serve immediately.

I really cannot describe adequately how creamy, sweet, and lovely this smoothie is:

I’m super excited that the Linwoods folks have offered to send one lucky reader a prize pack including three full-size bags of these super food mixtures, woo-hoo! This giveaway will be open to both U.S. and Canadian residents. I will be selecting the winner at random tomorrow, September 24th (quick turnaround because I have another something exciting planned for this Wednesday).

Special note: in doing the research on this company, I discovered that Linwoods operates a dairy in Ireland. While the company only sells the super food blend products in Northern America and these products do not contain animal products, I wanted to give full disclosure. If that is upsetting to you, then please accept my apologies and feel free to express your feelings in the comments section below.

I’m picking the winner of this giveaway tomorrow, September 24th, so submit your entry using the Rafflecopter form here:

As mentioned, being a food blogger definitely has its perks including samples and and the opportunity to host giveaways like this one. Clearly, however, someone needs to tell my cats to stop interrupting my work! :)

Deea September 23, 2013 at 6:07 am

I’m allergic to walnuts & cocoa, but all the other blends sound awesome!

MaryEllen September 23, 2013 at 6:23 am

Your smoothie looks amazing! Yum!

Jan-Marie September 23, 2013 at 6:36 am

What an awesome giveaway! Your smoothie looks great. I love pear in my smoothies for a little sweetness. Thanks for reminding me. I’d gotten away from my usual with trying new ingredients. Back to the original for me!

Suzanne @ hello, veggy! September 23, 2013 at 6:58 am

Your kitty is too cute! I hope he/she photo bombs more often :)

Carrie September 23, 2013 at 10:26 am

Thanks Suzanne! :)

I haven’t tried many superfoods but these sound good!

Emma September 23, 2013 at 1:07 pm

I love Linwoods products. They’re widely available here in England :)
I buy their hemp seeds regularly but would especially love to try the superfood mixes.

Lauren (@PoweredbyPB) September 23, 2013 at 1:33 pm

I’ve used Linwoods products for years, thanks for picking up on the dairy thing, I never knew that before.

Carrie September 24, 2013 at 6:45 am

Well, you’re ahead of me, Lauren, because I had never even seen these products before! :)

Sarah September 23, 2013 at 6:20 pm

That first cat photo demonstrates precisely the face I’d make at a green smoothie if I were a cat :)

MG September 23, 2013 at 7:37 pm

I’ve never tried that before, but your smoothie looks delicious! I just celebrated my 1yr anniversary of being 90% vegan and 10% pescaterian just this August and I am feeling great. I’m on the mission to beat my anxiety and depression, and I’ve found this eating lifestyle to be extremely excellent in my journey!

Carrie September 24, 2013 at 6:46 am

Great, MG! I’m so happy to hear that you are feeling good. I’ve also battled anxiety and this whole foods, plant-based approach has helped me tremendously. :)

Hi Carrie!
I follow your IG and love your posts.
I thought Co-Q-10 was animal based?
Where does Linwood source theirs from?
I love the giveaways, by the way!

Carrie September 24, 2013 at 6:45 am

Thanks for the heads up, Brandon! I had no idea that CoA10 could be animal-sourced. I checked the package label and it says “suitable for a vegan diet.” I will follow-up with the product rep and see if I can get confirmation that it is, indeed, non-animal based. Thanks again!

My favorite super food is blueberries.

Melissa Leech September 23, 2013 at 10:22 pm

Linwood’s products look amazing!! I think I got the idea to sprinkle hemp seed on top of my smoothie from you, now my daughter won’t have it any other way. Thank you…here’s to health

Carrie September 24, 2013 at 6:46 am

Oh, what a healthy girl! :)

kimmythevegan September 27, 2013 at 7:23 am

Oh this smoothies sounds delicious! I don’t often throw fresh pear in, but I do really like it. Bosc pear with raspberries and kale is an especially good combo =)
I’m going to have to look for Linwoods in the healthfood stores – looks like great stuff!
